Dear students, dear visitors,

Welcome to the course site of Data Science! Data Science is a learning trajectory which is taught within the Bachelor Biomedical Sciences, Utrecht University. It includes modules on Intro R, statistics within the course ‘Bio-informatica’.

Within the Biomedical Sciences, working with big data sets becomes more and more important. Therefore, the knowledge and skills how to handle data sets and how to perform statistical analyses is an important part of biomedical education.

Following different COOs (computer modules), you will install R and Rstudio and get acquainted with the basics of programming in R, after which you will use the programming to perform statistical analyses.

• COO Intro R focuses on the repetition and deepening the skills obtained in the earlier course, Onderzoeksmethoden.
  
• COO Genomics II focuses on the visualization of sequence data, using the Integrative Genome Viewer (IGV).
  
• COO Cancer Genomics is about the understanding of mutational signatures in whole-genome data of cancer patients.
• COO GWAS shows the importance of quality control before analyses of data. After quality control, you run a GWAS with SNP-data from ALS patients.
• COO RNA seq focuses on the analysis and visualization of RNA seq data from ‘bulk sequencing’.
• COO classification and prediction shows how to use classification models to classify groups and to assess and compare the quality of classification models.

Learning R can be difficult in the beginning, but also very exciting when you keep trying and succeed.
